Smart Fit Nutri | Healthy Competitions

Intro

Context I worked as a Content Designer / UX Writer at Smart Fit Nutri, an app focused on health, wellness, and habit tracking. The product is connected to Smart Fit's gym ecosystem and aims to support users in building sustainable healthy habits — nutrition, sleep, hydration, and physical activity. My work was grounded in behavioral studies on habit formation and motivation, including references such as BJ Fogg's Tiny Habits and James Clear's Atomic Habits, as well as research on social comparison and its effects on intrinsic motivation. --- The Product The Healthy Competitions feature allows users to create or join challenges within the app — competing with friends, gym partners, or other Smart Fit Nutri users based on healthy habit tracking. The feature was designed to leverage social motivation as a driver of engagement and habit consistency. --- The Challenge The main tension in designing this feature was balancing two competing forces: - Social motivation: competition can be a powerful driver of engagement - Toxic comparison: ranking-based systems can demotivate users who feel they're "losing" — especially beginners or people with different fitness levels The challenge was to create a competitive experience that was motivating without being discouraging — and to do that entirely through content and UX copy. Additional constraints: - Avoiding language associated with failure or inadequacy ("lose," "eliminated," "last place") - Making the experience inclusive for users at different fitness levels - Keeping the tone energetic and fun without being aggressive or pressuring --- My Role I was responsible for the full content design of the Healthy Competitions feature, including: - Naming the feature and defining its voice and tone - Writing all UX copy: titles, descriptions, CTAs, empty states, error messages, notifications - Defining the content strategy for ranking communication - Creating the copy framework for challenge invitations, progress updates, and results --- Process Research and Behavioral Insights Before writing a single line of copy, I conducted: - A review of behavioral research on social comparison, gamification, and intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation - Competitive analysis of apps that use social challenges (Duolingo, Nike Run Club, Strava, MyFitnessPal) - Workshops with the product and design team to align on the feature's emotional goals Key insight: the most engaging competitive features focus on personal progress rather than defeating others. The language should celebrate effort and consistency, not just results. Experience and Content Design From the research, I built a content framework based on three principles: 1. Reframe competition as self-improvement: "Challenge yourself alongside others" rather than "beat your opponents" 2. Celebrate participation, not just winning: every milestone in the challenge deserved recognition, not just the final ranking 3. Use inclusive, forward-looking language: focus on what users are doing, not on who's ahead or behind I applied this framework across every touchpoint of the feature — from the challenge creation flow to the weekly ranking notifications. --- Key Decisions - Replacing "ranking" with "progress board" in all user-facing copy - Using "you're keeping up your streak" instead of "you're in Xth place" in progress notifications - Writing challenge invitations that emphasized shared goals rather than competition ("Join [Name]'s challenge and build healthy habits together") - Avoiding the words "lose," "fail," "last," and "eliminated" throughout the entire feature - Designing empty states that encouraged users who hadn't started yet, rather than making them feel behind --- Results and Impact - Feature launched with positive reception in usability testing: users described the experience as "motivating," "friendly," and "not stressful" - Retention within the feature was higher than initially projected for the first 30 days post-launch - The content framework I developed became the reference standard for all gamification features within the app - Zero escalations related to toxic comparison or demotivating content in post-launch feedback --- My Role - Content Design / UX Writing - Behavioral research applied to content strategy - Full UX copy for the Healthy Competitions feature - Content framework for gamification and social features - Collaboration with Product, Design, and Engineering teams
